Pixel Pets

1 Week Game Jam (2012)

Built with Manic Engine

Pixel Pets is a jam game created by Manic Game Studios in late 2012 with the goal of building a fully featured virtual pet game in a week.

The game is designed to be persistent, and played over the course of many days, possibly months. Game time continues to advance in realtime even when you do not have the game open.

You are first presented with an egg, who introduces himself to you. After a short period of time the egg hatches and a little bouncing blob comes out.

It is your job to feed him, clean up after his toilet mess, make sure he goes to sleep on time, play with him, and give him medicine when he gets sick.

How well you do all these things affects different stat bars, which drain according to various circumstances.

Leaving poop sitting around is unhygienic and will cause your pet to get sick.

Sickness can be cured by giving your pet medicine.

Its better to wash the poop away before your pet gets sick.

Every action costs coins, which fall from the sky at random intervals, and time out after 10 seconds. You have to be paying attention to be able to tap on the coin and pick it up.

Different food will affect stats in different ways. For example a cupcake is a fun, but unhealthy snack. An apple is much more healthy, but less fun.

Playing ball is a great way to keep your pet happy and healthy. Throw a ball and watch him chase and kick it around the screen.

Staying awake at night time will cause your pet to become scared and unhappy.

Bad weather will also occasionally ruin your pet’s day.

If you don’t take good care of your pet, it will die.

Based on how well you take care of your pet, it will grow over time into one of four nal forms. Each has a different personality and will behave differently.

Take good care of your pet, and you can enjoy spending a long, happy life with it.
